PETERSBURG, Va – For Morgan Lucas, it appears that qualifying in the No. 16 and final position in the Top Fuel lineup for Sunday’s Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park would be an overwhelming assignment in racing the No. 1 Qualifier.
That’s not the case for Lucas.
He will face Tony Schumacher in the first round of eliminations and the 23-year old driver from Brownsburg, Indiana is feeling optimistic about his chances.
“They’re calling for the temperatures to be rising on Sunday reaching around the low 90s and that’s changes everything,” said a confident Lucas, who qualified with an elapsed time of 4.646 seconds, 307.51 mph. “It will be equal for everybody and I feel our car is running extremely well – good enough to run with them on a hot, slick racetrack.”
This is the 16th time Lucas has met Schumacher in NHRA National event competition with ‘The Shoe’ having an impressive lead in their head-to-head competition of 2- 13 against the Lucas Oil team. That hasn’t fazed the young driver at all and states it’s a matter of getting down a hot racetrack on race day and you can throw the past right out the window. Surprisingly, the last time the pair met in competition was in the quarterfinals of the Dallas race in 2006.
“I feel we’ll be all right for Sunday’s race,” said a positive feeling Lucas. “It really doesn’t matter what’s happened in the past, it’s all about tomorrow and that’s what we’re focusing on. It’s going to be a good race and I have to be ready and be on my game. We don’t have any pressure to perform, so we’re going towards the starting line anticipating having some all-day racing fun.”
ESPN2 will air qualifying highlights beginning at 7 p.m. tonight with the showing of the NHRA Race Day program presented by Lucas Oil Products on Sunday, Oct. 7. The final round results will be broadcast on 7 p.m. later in the evening.
