PETERSBURG, Va. – With all things being considered, Vietnam Veterans POW/MIA Top Fuel driver, Melanie Troxel is actually looking forward to race day in the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park despite qualifying in the lucky No. 13 position.
She will be racing Whit Bazemore for only the second time of her career with their last meeting being the first round of this year’s Mile-High Nationals in Troxel’s hometown of Denver.
“We ended up in the bottom half of the field, but we didn’t get down the track in the night session and we did successfully during the day,” said Troxel. “We look pretty good as compared with some other teams out there that were also getting down the track. I think it’s going to be just fine for us tomorrow running consistently well on a hot, slippery track. We have a good of a handle on the car with the conditions being offered and at the moment, we’re feeling pretty good right now.”
In addition to her qualifying efforts, Troxel has locked herself into the No. 4 position of the Techicoat Top Fuel Shootout, a race based on qualifying points for an entire year. She will race Brandon Bernstein in the first round of the special NHRA event being held in two weeks at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in which makes her viable for the $100,000 grand prize.
ESPN2-HD will show the qualifying highlights tonight at 7 p.m. and that will be followed up by NHRA Race Day presented by Lucas Oil Products on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. The final rounds of the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals will air at 7 p.m. later that day.
